De'Longhi Coffee Machine Not Working?

The Most Common De'Longhi Faults in Dubai:

The 'Fill Beans' error is the most reported De'Longhi fault in Dubai — and the most misunderstood. This error appears when the machine believes the bean hopper is empty, but in most cases the beans are still present. The actual cause is almost always oily bean residue coating the optical sensor inside the hopper, causing it to misread. A thorough clean of the sensor and grinder chute resolves this without any part replacement.

Grinder failures are the second most common fault. De'Longhi's built-in conical burr grinders are excellent, but they are highly sensitive to oily beans — and Dubai's popular Arabic-style dark roasts are some of the oiliest available. Residue accumulates on the burrs and inside the grinder mechanism, eventually causing it to jam, run slowly, or fail entirely. Regular grinder cleaning and a switch to medium-roast or less-oily beans significantly reduces this risk.

Brew unit errors — typically displayed as an 'error 2' or similar code — occur when the brew unit (the internal mechanism that forms and dispenses the coffee puck) becomes blocked or misaligned. The brew unit on De'Longhi bean-to-cup machines is removable and should be cleaned under running water weekly. When this is not done regularly, coffee grounds compact inside, causing the unit to jam and eventually triggering an error code.

Thermoblock faults are less common but more serious. The thermoblock is the element that heats water to brewing temperature. In Dubai, limescale buildup inside the thermoblock can cause it to overheat, fail to reach temperature, or produce inconsistent water temperature — all of which result in poor coffee quality and, eventually, machine shutdown.

Why Dubai Makes These Problems Worse:

Two factors specific to Dubai dramatically accelerate De'Longhi faults: hard water and heat. The city's water, sourced from desalination plants, has a TDS of 250–350 ppm. This causes limescale to build inside the thermoblock and water lines at two to three times the rate De'Longhi engineers expected when they designed descaling intervals.

The ambient heat also plays a role. Rubber seals and O-rings inside the machine deteriorate faster in high temperatures, leading to internal leaks. And milk residue inside automatic frothers and steam wands dries and hardens within hours in Dubai's warm climate, causing blockages that standard cleaning cycles cannot always remove.

How to Keep Your De'Longhi Running Well in Dubai:

Descale every four to six weeks using De'Longhi's own descaler or a certified equivalent. The three-month interval in the manual was designed for European water — in Dubai it is simply not frequent enough.

Remove and rinse the brew unit under running water at least once a week. This takes less than two minutes and prevents the most common error codes.

Use medium-roast beans, or at minimum, avoid the oiliest single-origin dark roasts in the hopper. If you prefer a strong cup, adjust the grind and strength settings rather than using darker beans.

Run the milk cleaning cycle after every use, and perform a full LatteCrema or frother deep-clean every two weeks.

Book a professional service annually. A qualified technician will fully descale the thermoblock with commercial-grade solution, calibrate the grinder, inspect all seals, clean the brew unit components that are not user-accessible, and run a full performance test.
