Common Faults & Causes

Thermoblock failure — no heat

The Dedica uses a thermoblock heating system rather than a traditional boiler. In UAE hard water conditions, limescale accumulates on the thermoblock's heating surface faster than on a traditional boiler, reducing its efficiency and eventually causing it to fail completely. A Dedica that produces cold or lukewarm coffee despite heating up normally usually has a partially scaled thermoblock. Total failure produces no heat at all.

Steam wand completely blocked

The Dedica's steam wand is a simple tube with a single-hole tip. It blocks rapidly if not wiped immediately after each use. Unlike bean-to-cup machines with internal steam circuits, the Dedica's wand is externally accessible — but the internal steam passage from the thermoblock to the wand can scale up and require professional descaling.

Pump pressure loss

The Dedica's pump is designed to operate at 15 bar maximum. Scale buildup in the pump body or inlet filter reduces effective pressure, resulting in under-extracted espresso. A pump that whines loudly without producing water is usually blocked by scale or air-locked from running dry.

Machine cycling on and off

A Dedica that switches on and immediately switches off, or that cuts out during brewing, has usually triggered its thermal protection cutout. This can be caused by scale buildup forcing the thermoblock to run hotter than normal, by insufficient ventilation (the Dedica needs at least 10 cm of clearance on all sides), or by a failing thermostat.

Portafilter not locking in

The Dedica's portafilter group head gasket can swell, harden, or deform over time, preventing the portafilter from locking into the group head at the correct position. This is a straightforward seal replacement.

No water flow from spout

After descaling or a period of non-use, air can become trapped in the Dedica's water circuit, preventing the pump from priming. Running the steam wand for 30 seconds with the water tank full usually purges the air lock. If water still doesn't flow, the pump inlet filter may be blocked.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Dedica produces small, weak shots — what do I adjust?

On the Dedica, shot volume is programmable by holding the single or double shot button during extraction to reprogram. If the issue is extraction quality rather than volume — watery, pale, thin crema — the grind is likely too coarse, or the portafilter basket is clogged with old coffee oils. Try a finer grind first, and if that doesn't resolve it, soak the basket in hot water with a cleaning tablet overnight.

The Dedica Arte's Panarello wand produces hot water instead of steam — why?

The Panarello wand uses steam to froth milk. If it is producing water instead of steam, the thermoblock has not reached steam temperature — usually because it was engaged too quickly after the brewing cycle, before the thermoblock could reach the higher steam temperature. Wait for the steam indicator light to be solid rather than flashing before engaging the wand.
